Shakespeare can be fun! Get your students thinking with these detailed pre-reading activities for Julius Caesar. This file includes three pre-reading activities that will help students consider the play's themes and build background knowledge on the historical content. The zip file includes both a word document so you can make changes if necessary, and PDF files to prevent changes in formatting.
The following activities are included in the zip file:
Activity 1: An anticipation guide where students decide how they feel about a series of statements based on the play's themes. These statements can be used as the basis of a class discussion.
Activity 2: Students conduct research about the government and political climate of both ancient Rome and Elizabethan England. Students can complete this activity independently or collaborate with classmates. The activity includes a research prompt, graphic organizer, and three short answer questions to help students summarize.
Activity 3: Students consider other works of historical fiction they have seen or read and answer a series of questions. The activity will help students consider why authors write about the past.
Teacher Notes: At the end of the word document, there are teacher notes with suggestions of ways the activities can be implemented in the classroom. There are also suggested answers to the short answer questions for Activity 2.
