Looking for a way to blend RAFTS writing with the Julius Caesar novel study? This performance task is a highly engaging writing task for students because they get a chance to take on the ROLE of a concerned citizen, their AUDIENCE is Julius Caesar himself, their TOPIC is to warn Caesar of the plot to assassinate him, their STRONG VERB is to inform, and their FORMAT is a letter. This item includes the RUBRIC, RAFTS planning sheet, and an example warning letter to Caesar for modeling w/ the class. Students really have a lot of fun with this and their performance is outstanding because they get a chance to both "tattle" on Brutus, Cassius, Casca, and the other conspirators, as well as feel like they can tell the character what to do. Let's face it, students really want to show what decision making skills they have and this writing opportunity allows them to decide the most important information that should be included in the warning letter to Caesar. This task really shows their ability to determine importance! I would recommend allowing the class to view the Youtube "BBC Julius Caesar" Video # 1 and #2 (just the first minute of video 2 is necessary - shows the assassination). The videos are captioned and cartoon-like in nature.
