“Pick the Perfect Pair” A Compound Word Game
Julius and Maya try on shoes, and now your students can join in the fun! This is a Concentration-style game in which students will use base words to form compound words that occur in the text. They must determine word meaning from the base words to complete the activity. CCSS L.2.4.d
One of the biggest shifts in the standards is a keen focus on language. Students need to appreciate that words have shades of meaning, multiple meanings, and relationships to other words. Students are to expand their vocabulary in the course of studying content. The following pieces address those areas.
Reflexive Pronoun Poster and Activities CCSS L.2.1.c
This mini-unit on 3rd person reflexive pronouns comes with a poster (2 versions) to lay out the concept, a fun whole class activity to reinforce the skill, and a printable that could be used for assessment purposes, or as a center activity.
Shades of Meaning: Word Choices for “Drink” CCSS L.2.5
We begin with Julius slurping his coffee, and move on to other drink words and their subtle and not so subtle differences.
Multiple Meaning Words CCSS L.2.4 and L.2.2.e
There is an organizer page for each of 4 multi-meaning words found in Julius. The first meaning comes straight from the story, and then students have the opportunity to explore a 2nd or even 3rd meaning. Active dictionary skills are included in the Common Core, and this is a perfect place to begin developing those.
Discussion Questions for Teacher Led Conversations
“K-2 should participate in rich, structured conversations with an adult in response to written texts....orally comparing and contrasting as well as analyzing and synthesizing, in the manner called for by the Standards.”
Response to Literature
Short constructed response is an element that will be part of the new standardized testing norm. Our kids need to write often and in a variety of lengths. Writing is part of the new test-prep- which is wonderful because more purposeful writing = better prepared for life students!
