Fable Writing Unit
– 10 Days – 58 pages
In this 10-day unit students will study mentor texts to become experts on the characteristics of fables and children’s books.
Then, they will write their own fable in the form of a children’s book. After reading and studying mentor texts, students will begin writing their fables. During the pre-writing phase students will select a moral, plan their fable, develop their characters, and establish the setting for their story. Students will develop their plot with plot development tools including brainstorming the conflict, outlining the plot sequence, creating a storyboard, and a plot pitch exercise with peers. After writing their first draft, students will revise their fables with revision guides on dialogue, showing rather than telling, adding sensory details, peer editing, and self-editing. Finally, after planning out the text and illustrations in their children’s book, students will produce a children’s book. Completed children’s books are perfect for sharing! Students can share their books with the entire class, small groups, partners, or even read them to younger students. This unit is fun, engaging, and a definite student-favorite!

This mini-unit provides numerous opportunities to develop the skill of identifying theme. Each lesson starts with a fun and engaging activity including Theme Comics, Cut-and-Paste Matching, and a Poetry Walk. Then, students learn about and practice identifying theme through whole group instruction, small group work, partnerships, and independent practice.
In this mini-unit, students will develop a deep understanding of literary devices, theme, explicit and implied theme, and how to identify theme in a passage. ”The People Could Fly”

In this unit, students creatively build background on Virginia Hamilton, slavery, and “The People Could Fly”
by assembling a group puzzle and participating in “Everyone’s an Expert”. Then, students develop understanding of the folktale through an initial reading and listening to the piece. Working with partners, students investigate the vocabulary in the folktale. After a circle reading of the folktale, students reflect on their learning. Then, after collaboratively creating a theme web, students create theme links that they can string together as a visual representation of the tale’s message. After a third reading of the folktale, students dive deeper into the folktale genre and provide textual evidence to support their understanding. Working in groups of five, students, then, discuss the folktale while responding to 25 discussion questions. The final assessment of the unit requires students to show their understanding, summarize the folktale, identify elements of the genre, identify its purpose, and analyze its theme.

Summer Reading Project
– Every Day – 36 pages
In this summer reading project, students will read a book and then create a book report inside a manila folder. Their report will include a plot diagram, character chart, setting profile, theme analysis, personal review and a listing of other books by the same author. For each element of the file folder project students complete guided pre-writes. Then, they write rough drafts for each piece of the project. Finally, after editing and revising their work, students create final copies of each report element and glue them into and onto their folders. The final product is a bold, interactive, and comprehensive book report.
