Do you want your students to be confident and capable mathematicians? I believe that for this to happen, students need to be equipped with a range of strategies, which they can add to their math tool belt!
The ‘Jump Strategy’ might have a number of different names depending on what curriculum you teach under. So I have provided this example so you know what strategy I am referring to...
25 + 9 = ?
STEP 1 – Find your starting number and circle it on the number line (Number lines provided on the worksheets)
STEP 2 – Make a JUMP to the next tens number (remember your friends of ten).
25 + 5 = 30
STEP 3 - Add on what is left over.
30 + 4 = 34
These worksheets focus on how to apply this strategy to ADDITION questions. Currently I teach a class with VERY diverse abilities and I understand that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ worksheet. However, I have created these twelve worksheets, with the intention that there is hopefully one for all the ability levels in your class (and also mine!). Students who need support will be taken right back to the very beginning of the strategy and supported with basic skills and number knowledge. Likewise, students who need to be challenged will be given a chance to apply the strategy through more advanced questions. Detailed answers are also included.
I love this strategy and I love teaching it! I hope you and your class enjoy using this resource.
