More Info:

All the American holiday posters are written in acrostic poem format. Each letter from the name of the holiday begins a sentence or phrase with info about that holiday. Every poster includes the pages for the actual poster, a cover page which includes an answer key for the grammar task, a blank template for students to write their own acrostic poem about the holiday, and 1 page explaining what the images on the poster are.

The lesson plan explains how to do some activities using the posters to supplement your students’ learning. It offers ideas for various writing and speaking tasks. The lesson plan is based on a 60-minute class period and includes tips for modifying the activities if your class time is shorter than that.

Putting the posters together just requires a few minutes of cutting the margins and then taping, gluing or stapling the pages together. As a mater of fact, you don’t have to cut the margins but the posters will look better if you do. Detailed directions, with pictures, are included in the resource. Laminating the finished posters will ensure they can be used year after year.

Templates for 3 writing tasks are included:

* Write an acrostic poem for the word holiday.

* Students invent a holiday and write an acrostic poem about it.

* Students select and then describe how they celebrate one of the holidays.

A blank template without directions is also provided and students can use it to write final copies of the poems.

In addition, blank acrostic poem templates for each holiday are provided so students can also write their own poems about each American holiday. These pages follow the actual poster pages.

A grammar task to rewrite the text on the posters by including the definite article "the" is also included. An explanation of this grammar point is provided so even if you’re not an English Language Arts teacher, you can still have your students do this task. The answers for this are on a page that also functions as the cover page for each holiday poster.

A vocabulary task about the 1 word with a multiple meaning words is included, too. Directions are in the Notes to the Teacher section.

The 5 discussion topics can be used with both native English speakers and English Language Learners, including ELLs at a high beginning level of proficiency. A page with 15 sentence starters that helps students talk about the posters is provided.

A page listing the ELA Common Core standards this resource helps address is included for your convenience if you are teaching in a Common Core state.
