Texas History students read an excerpt of the order to free slaves, 2 accounts of slaves hearing of their emancipation after the Civil War, and two excerpts from the Black Codes. They then answer 14 questions (including one creative task). The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--What does, “they will not be supported in idleness” mean? Using prior knowledge, which institution did southerners believe was contributing to such idleness?
--How do you think Sarah and her parents earned an income when they were “hired out?”
--Based on James’ memories, what type of master do you think Mrs. Orr had been? Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.
-- Identify 3 types of rights free slaves were supposed to have per section and 3 ways section 2 directly contradicted and retracted the rights detailed in section 1.
--Juneteenth has become known as “Freedom Day” or “Independence Day.” Do you think that is accurate, and warranted? Why or why not? If you were to rename the day, what would you pick and why?
