I have created an "I have..Who has..?" game for each of the short vowel sounds: a, e, i, o and u as well as a game with a mix of cvc words. Each vowel sound has its own game of 28 cards, covering the most common word families for that vowel. These cards all have Jungle or Rain Forest animals on them, in the top right corner are colored dots so that you can easily distinguish each set of cards so there are no mix ups.
In order to play, select the vowel you wish to concentrate on and pass out that set of cards to your students. There are 28 cards so that large classes can play as a whole group, while small classes may have to double up on cards. The student with the green card reads his card first, then the student with the responding card and so on down the line until the Stop! card is reached. These games will give your students valuable practice blending cvc words, all while they are having fun!
Challenge your students by setting a timer and seeing if you can beat your time each time you play! Your students will be clamoring to play this game and it is perfect for transitions, a quick brain break or for those extra 5 minutes when a lesson runs short!
I hope you enjoy these games, please stop by my blog, Herding Kats in Kindergarten, for tips, ideas and freebies!
