My students love to read chapter books during Independent Reading, especially Junie B. Jones, but I needed a solution to keep them accountable. Stopping to answer questions after each chapter can make reading more of a chore and discourage students from wanting to invest in a good book.
To help with this, I designed an outline/chapter-by-chapter graphic organizer for each of the 28 Junie B. Jones books. When they begin a new Junie B. book, they choose the graphic organizer that matches and use this to do a quick summary of each chapter before they go on to the next.
These graphic organizers allow students to stay invested in their book with just a quick stop to reflect on what they have read, and let me know they are reading each chapter throughly!
