I created this project when I was deciding on back to school read alouds. I had heard of the book, and it was touched by its lesson, but I wanted to put my own spin on it. I read the book and then discussed with the class how they are all a wonder in some way. We talked about how someone else's "junk" can be someone else's treasure. After discussing the book, I gave them this assignment. They were to bring in 5 "junk" items and turn them into something meaningful--something about themselves, a feeling they had, or a symbol. The projects turned out amazingly and a powerful message was sent. You can also find items from me that include a "Junkyard Wonders" assignment paper. Have fun!
