Jurassic Genetics: Monohybrid and Dihybrid Application
Punnett squares should be something that students understand beyond just a fill-in-the-box level of knowledge. This activity will require students to take on the persona of a genetic engineer for a dinosaur themed park. Using their knowledge of monohybirds and dihybrids, students will calculate and analyze various crosses.
There are differentiated cards that you can use throughout the activity to either challenge your gifted students further or offer remedial help to your struggling learners. These are explained in the teacher guide.
The information provided is targeted to an 8th or 9th grade on-level life science course. The details are not deep enough to be suitable for an AP style course. I complete this activity in groups of 3-4 students over one class period. It does require a little bit of prep, but it's all straight forward and easy. Additionally, I've included some extension ideas you can try depending on how your class is set up. The Teacher Guide
will walk you through the various options!
- Teacher Guide
- Student Handout
- Allele Pieces
- Differentiation Cards
- Table Placemat
