Ever hear moans and groans when it is time to edit our essays? Editing can be boring to many, which is why I came up with an interactive way to edit their essay. These are all suggestions based on my experience running a Just Write Café, in my own classroom.
I created a Just Write Café Menu, which includes the editing process for their essay. The menu includes looking for:
• Appetizers – What tastes good:
• punctuation, spelling, paragraph
• Main Course – The Bulk of the Essay:
• thesis statement, citing the resources they used, explanations of their opinion
• Dessert – Tastefully Help a Partner!
• Guiding the students through a peer edit
I set up my classroom for the event. I treat it as though they are entering a Café, have music playing, and dress up to play the role as the master chef. Before I let them go to their table, I meet as a group, and explain my expectations. I have each table, strategically grouped by ability. This way, I can rotate through each group, and support each student. I have the students together who need the most help, this way, I can give the same support to each group. I also use my Reservation at Just Write Café, with each student name and table number, as a way to write notes to myself, when I conference with the students, and any additional support I may give, or information that I need to write down.
After the editing process is over, students then type their final drafts on google classroom. My students loved this activity and were fully engaged the whole time. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me. This was a very successful event, and my principal even joined us! Happy Writing!
