Product Description

Teach Kindergartners and 1st Graders the basics to coping skills: that coping skills are what we do to make ourselves feel better when we are sad, angry, or scared. Children learn that not all coping skills help us feel better though. Some are hurtful.

I use this lesson during Red Ribbon Week to emphasize the difference between healthy and harmful things people do to feel better, drugs being an example of a coping skill that hurts. Please note that this lesson does not mention drugs itself, but you can add that component in yourself if you wish.

This lesson utilizes choral response and practicing of coping skills to keep students engaged while learning each skill.

Then each student is given a double-sided "Hurt" and "Help" card, and they need to decide if each coping skill on the PowerPoint presentation would help their problem, or hurt it (make it worse).

Finally, coloring sheets are using to solidify the vocabulary phrase "coping skill".
