Research shows that students increase their problem solving ability when they do fewer problems with an emphasis on talking about the strategies they used to solve.
I do one to two of these a day and use a math talk protocol to help my students talk about their strategies. Each of these subtraction problems is worded differently to expose students to the various ways the problem may cue them.
