This Common Core aligned lesson plan for kindergartens, first graders, or second graders on research and writing through graphic organizers is best used as a literacy center.
Each month is themed and it is for the second semester. There are five choices of topics for each month, January-June.
My daughter, who is a first grade teacher, chooses one to use per week. You decide how you want to use them and how often. You might use one every two weeks. My daughter takes the students through the steps of reading and pre-writing and writing for several weeks before she turns it over to the students to do at a literacy center.
She chooses the topic and brings several books on that topic into her classroom and puts them at the literacy center with the pre-writing graphic organizer. When the students have filled in the spaces with words about the topic on those, they then get the writing organizer and write their sentences using the words from the pre-writing graphic organizer. Each writing organizer has instructions for what students should be writing. More instructions are added each month. And, for each month there is a Check List for what students should be accomplishing in their writing. Students should be given this, and they review and check in boxes if they have written what they should have in a particular paragraph.
As the students write each month, they are asked to do more and so you might have to do some additional teach pieces about indenting for paragraphs, writing topic sentences, etc. The students really love looking up information about the different topics. They also grow as writers as they continue to use the information they have “researched” on the given topic to write good sentences. Each month the writing instructions have more the students are to do so in the months of May and June, they should be writing structurally good paragraphs.
You can go a step further and have students present short oral reports from their “research” also.
In addition, students can color the clip art or draw and color a picture on the back of one of the pages.
