This is a handbook to assist teachers in making appropriate written referrals to outside agencies. As we are educators and not medical practitioners, we technically can not make a "referral" hence the document title is "Recommendations to Outside Professionals"
This document will help teachers articulate their concerns by listing common characteristics children might display when needing intervention by an Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Optometrist or other professional.
Some times teachers just can't seem to "put their finger" on what to say when making a referral. The dot points listed under each section may assist. It is important to note that while a teacher's professional instinct plays a part in making referrals, they must have the adequate evidence to support their claim as private practice can be expensive. You want to be sure about sending parents off down the correct path of intervention.
It is also important to note, that school based interventions should be trialled before outside professional help is sought.
In all instances, teachers should refer up to their cluster leaders, Deputy/ Assistant Principal or line manger before meeting with the parents to discuss a referral.
This document contains sample letters on how to write a referral to an outside agency.
