PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I am so excited to share these lesson plans. In this product you will find a collection of 10 science lesson plans that cover topics ranging from motion to changes in matter. Lesson plans have been designed to be done in 20-minute segments with lots of opportunities for writing during language arts time! Here is a list of the activities:

Lesson 1: Changing Beads-in this lesson, students explore beads that seem to magically change when placed in the sun. Students come to learn; however, the beads are designed with materials that make them sensitive to sunlight. Students design their own experiment to test the effectiveness of sunscreen. Grades K-2; Topics: sunlight, inquiry

Lesson 2: Changing Crystals-in this lesson, students explore crystals that change when placed in water. Students then design their own experiment to test how temperature causes them to change. Grades K-5-Topics: Temperature's affect on matter

Lesson 3: Mummified Apples-in this lesson that crosses both Egypt and Science, students explore how solids can affect other solids while exploring the process of mummification. Students design their own experiment to test which substance is the best at preserving an apple. Grades: 1-5; Topics: mummification, solids affect on other solids

Lesson 4: Sound Machine-in this lesson; students explore sound by building their own sound machine from simple materials. Students then design their own experiment to see if changing the amount of water in a glass will affect the pitch produced when a spoon taps the glass. Grades 1-5, Topics: Sound, Inquiry

Lesson 5: Popping Popcorn-in this lesson, students compare and contrast kernels of popcorn to popped popcorn in their quest to find out what makes popcorn pop. Students design their own experiment to test if changing the location of where popcorn is stored has any effect on how long it takes for it to pop. Grades 4-6, Topics: Temperature and matter; Inquiry

Lesson 6: Oil Spill-in this lesson, students explore the most effective method to cleaning up an oil spill. Grade 3-6; Topics: Oceanography; inquiry

Lesson 7: Rolling Cars-in this lesson, students explore kinetic and potential energy, define these terms, sort pictures of examples of each, and design their own experiment to see if changing the height of a ramp has any effect on the distance a car rolls. Grades3-6; Topics: Potential/Kinetic Energy, Inquiry

Lesson 8: Designing Catapults-in this lesson, students build a simple catapult and then modify it to see if they can get a small marshmallow to travel further. Grades 3-6; Topics: Engineering, Inquiry, and Simple Machines

Lesson 9: Exploring Ice-in this lesson, students explore an unknown object (which they later learn is ice) in order to generate questions. Grade: K-1; Topics: Solid Matter; Ice, Melting

Lesson 10: Scientists Conduct Research-in this lesson, students see how many books an egg will hold. Students then design their own experiment to see if changing the position of the egg makes any difference on how many books an egg will hold. Grades K-2, Topics: Inquiry. This lesson can be a great introduction to the topic of Rome and their use of arches

All lesson plans have lab sheets for students to use, lab directions, and very detailed directions for teachers. Teacher keys are provided for all lesson plans.
