Check out my POST explaining the KNS product:
The KNS approach problem solving process that has students focus on decomposing word problems before attempting to solve. Students write all that they know in the K section. What they need to know or the question in the N section. The S section if for students to set it up, not solve! Students are to take time to think about how would I solve this, and write an equation using a symbol or question mark for the unknown. The next slide is a sample problem and solution and the rest are blank for you to use as masters. The first page has the planning and solving on one page. The second breaks it into two pages. I have also included copies of these split pages that have room on the top that you can add your problem right on the page as well. I love this approach as it pushes me as a teacher to us the ever important mathematical practice #2.
