This activity can help you teach...
Standard K.CC.6: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.
K.OA.1Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings2, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
K.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
This power point has 10 word problems. Each word problems have 10 pictures for the children to cut out to help them solve the problem. Because it is a powerpoint you could do the problems on the smart board and move the pictures around and/or draw on the slides.
The word problems are designed to be done in a journal where the students can draw and rearrange their pictures to help them solve the problems. Each problem also ask questions such as who has more, is taller, has the least, ect.
When I do this activity we discuss what the equation is that we used to solve. At first they need support, but it always amazes me at how good they get at this by the end.
This could also be used in 1st grade at the beginning of the year to review word problems.
