Created for a lower ability year 9 class as part of a SOW to get them ready for the skills that'll be tested at GCSE, this lesson is based around "Leisure" by William Henry Davies. The pupils are asked to explain (in their own words; a key skill for GCSE) the meaning of 'care' in three different contexts. Having recognised the difference between long and short vowel sounds, they are then asked to look at the effect of the long vowel sounds in the poem and at the mood created by the simile. The lesson ends (could be extended over two lessons) with the pupils being asked to write in Davies's style, but with a more personal and modern context. My year 9 class seemed to enjoy this lesson.
