Kadir Nelson is an artist, illustrator, and children’s author. His work often depicts Black history and culture. I have created a packet of reading and writing activities for students to learn more about the works of Kadir Nelson. He is a “Living Legend” in Black History because he is blazing new paths and is alive and relatable to people of all walks of life today.
Black History Month is a wonderful time to learn about Mr. Nelson. But, believe me, his contribution to the worlds of art and literature far surpass the confines of only being studied for one month. He has illustrated well known books for other authors. Most recently, he has written books that have beautiful illustrations and heart touching stories for himself. A few of his titles include:
Henry Freedom Box
Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom
If You Plant a Seed
I Have a Dream (Words by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)
We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball
Do you see any titles that you recognize?
Find his books (whether he only illustrated them or authored and illustrated them), purchase this packet of activities, and enjoy the beauty of his artwork and literary contributions.
***Please view the Preview to see the ENTIRE packet prior to purchasing to make sure that the activities will meet your needs.****
