This is a hands-on paper lab where students create a karyotype! This is a diverse set of karyotypes - 12 different sets of idiogram chromosomes. Not many karyotyping activities provide you this many sets!
This allows students to create karyotypes for 2 normal karyotypes (male and female) plus a variety of disorders that include trisomy and monosomy disorders, translocations, a deletion, and a duplication. Through visualizing these errors, students are introduced to the causes of chronic myeloid leukemia, Turner syndrome, Down syndrome, Ewing's sarcoma, Patau syndrome, Edwards syndrome, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Wolf-Hirschborn syndrome, chromosome 9 inversion, and HeLa cells!
After students have cut out their chromosomes, a Denver system template provides students a structure on which to sort out and neatly assemble their karyotypes. They also receive a chromosome reference sheet to aid them. Students recognize that chromosomes are sorted by length, centromere position, and banding patterns. A lab analysis worksheet will help students look at the completed karyotypes from the whole class.
A teacher's guide with suggestions for use is included, as well as an answer key to the karyotypes. There is also a PowerPoint with accompanying student note guide that can be used to introduce karyotypes, nondisjunction in meiosis, chromosome number errors, and chromosome structure errors.
For single classroom only; not to be shared publicly.
This is a great activity to follow this Meiosis Stations Activity!
