This product is made to be used with the super fun Kat and Squirrel Go Camping – Sound and Light Unit for First Grade NGSS unit.

NGSS "I Can" Cards - This product includes "I Can" statement cards for all 4 of the Next Generation Science Standards first grade Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer and one card for the k-2 Engineering Design standard.

AND

Rubrics to assess each student on their understanding of each chapter.


"I Can" Card Directions:
Before each chapter in the Kat and Squirrel Go Camping lessons, display and read the corresponding "I Can" card.

Break the statement down to kid-friendly language with the students.

Ask the class to keep the statement in mind as they do their science work for this lesson.

Refer back to the statements as needed.

Close the day's lesson by reviewing the "I Can" statement and tying it to the present day's work.

What are “I Can” Statement cards?
They are cards that can be used by the teacher to explain the learning goals for a lesson.

Used school-wide, they create consistency in the learning process.
The cards included here are designed to fit with the lessons in the Kat and Squirrel Go Camping science unit.

Rubric Directions:
During each lesson confer with individual students as they are working in order to determine their understanding of the lesson objective.

You might choose to start with the following questions, but be sure to probe deeper to get a full understanding of each student’s knowledge.

Record their answers/ideas/explanations on the rubric paper and determine a score.

(To make answer collection easier you could record student explanations on post-it notes then transfer the notes to the rubric pages.)
