Art is ... Kehinde Wiley Portraits & Patterns (6 pages)
This packet is 6 pages of jpgs. You will need an ipad or iphone and printer with this project. These pages will help the students understand a current modern artist's preferred painting method, expertise and gigantic vision. He is also painting "brown skinned" people, whom have been neglected in art history. His work is inspiring and eye opening!
Critical Thinking- Same or Different "The Chancellor Seguirer"
Students will compare Wiley's picture with a famous artist from the 17th Century, Charles Le Bron. His parody is brilliant and also on a very grande scale.
Please look at "Kehinde Wiley museum" on Google to see photos of the scale of his art work. This is important for your students to understand his grandeur of scale!
Page 2 Portraits
Students will have to take a picture of another student in this same pose. Then they will print it out and use it to fill in the blank area with their friend's portrait.
Page 3 Portraits
Students will have to take a picture of two students in this same pose. Then they will print it out and use it to fill in the blank area with their friends' portrait.
Page 4 Patterns
This page has 3 different patterns. Students will reproduce the pattern in the adjacent blank box first in black and white. Then they can change the color palette and color it in. Kehinde often has his assistants painting the patterned backgrounds, while he concentrates on painting the figures/portraits.
Page 5 Patterns
This page is one large rug pattern, reproduced in black and white.
Students are to color it, choosing their own color palette. They can use whatever medium is appropriate for them.
Page 6 Kehinde's Photo
This page students will practice drawing both the figure and the background in the blank box.
I have used Kehinde's pictures and famous works of art, as Fair Use in Education. In order for students to understand his artistic forte and direction, they must see examples of his work. Visual understanding of an artist's work can not be taught without having visual resources available to enhance their artistic learning.
