"Kelsey Green, Reading Queen" is a charming novel by Claudia Mills (and illustrated by Rob Shepperson) that your readers will fully enjoy!
This novel tells the story of a very strong reader who will stop at nothing to win her school's reading contest. However, she learns a valuable lesson that winning the contest cannot replace her relationships with others.
This novel study guides readers (independently, within a book club / lit circle group, or guided reading group) through the novel with Before Reading, While Reading, and After Reading questions for each question. These questions, graphic organizers, and activities are meant to engage readers with the text while building essential vocabulary and comprehension skills. There is a heavy emphasis on text evidence and inference skills that are crucial for success in today's ELA!
Each chapter includes a vocabulary building question, some form of monitoring activity throughout the chapter, and post-reading questions. Questions marked with a shovel image require students to "dig deep" to get to the answer! The majority of questions are text-dependent, and require students to refer to specific points in the novel in their responses and to cite evidence to support their claims. CCSS alignment included for grades 3-5!
