Please note: Some of Kendrick Lamar's lyrics that students will be looking up for this assignment contain mature language. Depending on the age group you teach, you may want to find clean versions of the lyrics. There are no lyrics included in this download, but any song students need to reference can be found online.
Kendrick Lamar is making headlines lately, and many of my students talk about him non-stop.
This writing menu will allow students to select the topics that interest them the most while you assess multiple writing styles.
Students will complete three writing assignments (research, persuasive, and poetry) from the following categories:
★To Pimp a Butterfly (Kendrick Lamar's album)
★Pulitzer Prize (Kendrick Lamar recently won!)
This Kendrick Lamar writing menu works great as a stand-alone lesson, a last minute sub plan, or as extension work. I've found that many of my students who are hard to reach toward the end of the year appreciate researching Kendrick Lamar and selecting the assignments they want to complete.
This download includes:
★1 Kendrick Lamar writing menu: Students select three writing assignments (poetry, persuasive, and research) from three different categories (To Pimp a Butterfly album by Kendrick Lamar, Kendrick Lamar's recent Pulitzer Prize win, and Rap music)
★1 Kendrick Lamar writing menu planning sheet: A blank template for students to brainstorm their ideas or keep track of their sources
★1 Kendrick Lamar writing menu rubric
This assignment will work even for students who don't like Kendrick Lamar, as they can research rap music and complete other assignments not directly related to Kendrick Lamar.
