Description

This is a 20 day reading workshop unit which uses books by Kevin Henkes to examine characters and theme. It is specifically aligned with Common Core Standards and provides day by day lesson plans, reading extension worksheets and cooperative learning activities.

The books included in this unit are:
-Chrysanthemum
-Wemberly Worried
-Sheila Rae the Brave
-A Weekend with Wendell
-Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse
-Lilly’s Big Day
-Julius: The Baby Of The World
-Chester's Way.

In addition to the lesson plans your students will be able to:
-Track a character's feelings as they change over the course of their book
-Track their own reactions to story events
-Provide alternative solutions to problems presented in their texts
-Use the chew and chat discussion starters to share ideas about Henkes' characters with a reading partner
-Compare Sheila the Brave and Wemberly Worried in a showdown format
-Dramatize the characters Chester, Wilson, and Lily
-Identify ways supporting characters influence the main character and help resolve the story's problem
-Use what they know about familiar characters to predict what might happen in the next story
-Describe characters using evidence from the text to support their ideas
-Summarize a book's theme or message
-Write alternative endings
-And use the language stem conversation starters to have dialogues with a reading partner about books they are reading during independent reading time.

As supplemental materials to this unit you will also find a three page summative assessment aligned with Common Core Standards, a 9 page Henkes' Characters and Me self to text connection book, 16 Language Stem cards aligned with Common Core Standards, and 16 "I Can!" statements cards related to standards and objectives covered throughout the unit.
