Description

Are your students making well-informed career choices based on their own self-assessments, strengths and weaknesses? This slide deck resource will enable your students to research a job that matches who they are and what they want to do after graduation and in their post-secondary life skills/development. Students will understand needed preparation, gain resume writing skills and they will practice interviewing skills.

Overview and Purpose

Students spend time on pages 119–140 in My Transition Portfolio (student edition), pages 134–153 in the teacher’s edition. They will be reviewing their personal strengths and matching them to their job choices. Specific activities guide students in linking their strengths to tasks within the workplace or community. Opportunities for online research activities will be the focus during this section, and a career research paper will be written and added to their Notebook. Additionally, students will gather information for resume development and practice interview skills with their peers or adults who are invited to the classroom.

2. Discuss the need for employers to find applicants who have a specific level of education or experience for the targeted job.

3. Identify opportunities on campus or within your community to further develop the pre-employment skills that employers look for when hiring for entry-level jobs.

4. Prior to formally identifying a future vocational track, have students review the personal strengths identified in previous work. Reinforce the need to find careers that match the career they would like to pursue.
