Patterning is a skill that should be taught throughout the year, and with this hands-on activity students can practice and be assessed when ready.

Students practice:

  • Creating and recreating patterns with two or more attributes
  • Sorting and organizing objects with like attributes (e.g., choose beads to use)
  • Practicing fine-motor skills by stringing on beads
  • Identifying and labelling the pattern core
  • Coding the pattern and its core

How to use:

  1. Introduce a reusable learning station in your classroom using the Key Chain Patterning template
  2. Provide students with the template when they are ready to record after having time with materials
  3. Practice and repractice until students are ready to be assessed!
  4. Reuse this activity throughout the year to challenge students to create more complex patterns
  5. Final products can be sent home as gifts for family members, or used by the students themselves

  • Pipecleaners or String
  • Pony Beads
  • Colouring and Writing Supplies
