High interest, nonfiction article describing the re-discovery of the Lord Howe giant walking stick bug, and how scientists faced the dilemma of bringing this giant insect back from the edge of extinction and their efforts to integrate it back into the environment. This unit is always popular with my high school students. Embedded in the actual article is a fantastic link highlighting a giant stick insect hatching from an egg--the video is quite captivating and I always show it to my class before telling them anything else about the topic. They enjoy trying to guess what on earth is emerging from the egg, and it really captures their interest for reading the article.
This unit takes approximately one week and comes with the following materials:
The Nonfiction article
Powerpoint featuring pre-reading and after-reading questions
Multiple Choice assessment featuring keystone style/common core questions
Constructed Response Essay
