This activity is a great way to start off an informational writing unit! Students will analyze closely the different categories of a writing rubric and the different levels of proficiency students must have to score at each level. This particular rubric is based off the Tennessee Writing Rubric for grades 4-5 but is very applicable to writing in any state! The students will work to complete a "kid-friendly" version of the state rubric by filling in the different levels of proficiency at each category. Before students even begin their writing assignment, they will already have a firm understanding of what is expected from them in every area of the rubric and what it takes to score at a level 4 in writing! Once completed, this rubric can be used as a writing tool throughout the year for various informational writing assignments. I used this rubric to assess my students' writing, but I also had them using the rubric to assess their own writing and to give feedback to a partner about their writing. I saw such growth from my students in the area of writing after completing this activity. No longer was the rubric just used by the teacher for grading, but more importantly, it was understood how to use the rubric as the writer!
