I use these starting on the first day of school. I introduce my 1st Grade students to the dictionary, and show them how to find words. Then, I give each of them a few cards to color and fill out. The finished product goes up as borders around my various focus walls.
As the year goes by, we move on to specific spelling patterns, and these cards become a center activity. As the students complete new cards, they can pull one of their old cards from the wall and put up their new one. The old cards go into their file for their end-of-the-year book.
This 77-slide PowerPoint is meant to be printed out as individual slides as you need them. It includes: two separate cards (on single slides) for each letter of the alphabet; the most common digraphs and diphthongs; and spelling-pattern cards (e.g., CVCE).
