Dig in the dirt, for the sake of science! In this lesson students will learn what a soil scientist does, and will contribute to a citizen science project to help real soil science researchers at the University of Oklahoma. Through inquiry-based activities students will:
- Understand what a soil scientist does
- Learn how to take a soil sample
- Identify what is in soil
Activity would align within units of study connected to NGSS K-LS1-1, 2-PS1-1, or 5-LS2-1. Can also be used as a science center activity, outdoor activity, or STEM enrichment option. NOTE: This lesson uses a kit available to anyone for free (link and directions provided), but the kit does take approximately 2 weeks to arrive in the mail. Planning ahead is advised :)
