Use newspapers from Kids Day to promote reading, comprehension, discussions, and writing in your classroom.
Kids Day is one day a year in Central California where the Fresno Bee newspaper is sold on every street in the beginning of March. This year it is March 8, 2016. The proceeds go to Valley Children's Hospital to help find cures for deadly childhood diseases and provides help for the families of these children.
Each year I buy newspapers for my classroom and students read the paper, and then respond to four articles. This PowerPoint makes this lesson very simple. Just run off one of the three student pages, show the PowerPoint to give directions, and have the students read. You will be surprised by how your children interact with the articles. I always have really great "authentic" discussions happen naturally in the classroom without any effort on my part because this edition of the newspaper is so well thought out.
