In our world of bullying and mimicking characters on television, our students sometimes do not stop and think of how to be kind or look for the positive attributes of others. If you are looking for a lesson to add in with your current character education lessons, this one was a winner for my students and me!
This Kind Comments Valentine Card lesson is one that can be used at any time during the year, but lends itself nicely to use around Valentine's Day. Students must spend time thinking about their friends positively, write their ideas, then choose their favorite "Kind Comment" for each friend. This lesson can be adapted to use in any grade level, but works well for 3rd - 6th graders.
The ending result of this affective lesson will be encouraging for each student as the "Kind Comments" are revealed! These comments can be a keepsake for students to reflect back upon in times when they need a boost of happiness or encouragement.
Students must brainstorm encouraging words to compliment classmates, phrase comments so that they are positive, and use decision making to select the comments they will write about others.
Smiles on students' faces are sure to be found when they finally see the "Secret Kind Comments!"
