Product Description

Learning sight words is essential for reading success. This set of practice packets for the first 100 sight words your students need to learn will give them plenty of practice!

The words included in this resource are divided into ten packets that focus on ten words at a time.

The first packet starts with the most basic and commonly used high frequency words. After that, they are grouped primarily by the sound or irregular spelling pattern that makes them sight words. This helps students connect words that have a similar sound even if they aren’t spelled alike.

Although most of the words have unexpected spelling patterns, there are a few phonetically correct words included (such as the words “new” and “her”). Since these words can actually be sounded out, they aren’t true sight words that need to be memorized. However, I have included them because of how frequently they appear in text and because their phonics rules are more advanced.

The activities in each packet include:

  • Word Cards – These include tracking lines underneath the words to build phonemic awareness. Students place their finger under the starting dot and move their finger under the word as they read.
  • Match and Color – Students draw lines to match the words, then color the words containing the target sound.
  • Read it, Trace it, Write it – Students read the word, trace it, and write it themselves in Elkonin boxes.
  • Read, Highlight, Read – Students read the sight word. Find and highlight it in a sentence. Read the sentence. Each sentence includes sight words taught up to that point and easily decodable words (mostly cvc words building up to include some blends, digraphs, and silent E words by the tenth packet). These sentences can also be used for fluency practice.
  • Circle the Word – Use the included ”Words for Dictation” lists for this activity. As the teacher (or a reading partner or parent) reads each word aloud, the student finds and circles it. This can be used as an assessment piece.

In addition to the ten packets, there are flashcards for all 100 sight words. These can be used for practice in small or whole group or sent home for practice.
