Students, working in pairs, use a cup with a given number of beans (the teacher can differentiate depending the ability level of the students). They gently shake out the beans on to the circle mat. They can either add the beans in both sections together to find multiple ways to make a number, or subract one section from the known whole to identify the mising number. There are recording sheets for students to write their addition or subtraction sentences. This is a great math center activity.
