PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Unit description and essential knowledge: Kindergarten students must learn cardinality and counting before any other math concept. Cardinality and counting involves learning the number names and the counting sequence.
1) Students must first learn to count out loud to 100, and then learn to count out loud to 100 by 10s. Learning to count is done through activities such as counting out loud to the students and having them clap, stomps, jump, etc.
2) Students must learn to count objects using manipulatives, counting them out loud. Students will practice counting objects that are in different configurations in the following order; in a line, rectangular arrays, circles and finally scattered configurations.
3) Once students have learned to count out loud and count objects they will begin learning Subitizing. Subitizing involves instantly recognizing instantly how many objects are in a group of objects without counting.
4) After learning Subitizing, students will learn to count on from a given number. This process teaches children to relate cardinality to counting. Students learn to recognize that each number includes the number before plus one more. Teach counting on using manipulatives such as base ten blocks and nesting dolls. Also create word problems that involve adding a small number to a larger number.
