Want to host a family reading/literacy night that your students, families, teachers, and principal will be talking about for days? How about an escape challenge? I created and used this at my school in October of 2018 and it was a huge success.
When families enter the school, they’ll read the backstory of why they are “locked” in the school and be given a recording sheet. The recording sheets are editable so you can enter your own text to let the families know where to go for each challenge. The challenges are similar to what you would have at a center or small group. Most of the challenges just need to be printed, laminated, and cut. One of the kindergarten challenges is “fishing for rhyming words.” I made fishing poles by attaching a string and magnets to dowel rods. The completed challenges will lead them to a final code word that will free them from the school! I’ve included an editable flyer to send home with students.
This can be done with or without boxes and locks. There are directions for doing it either way. I’ve included tips on how to make DIY lock boxes and a link to 4 letter word locks on Amazon.
