This is an activity that I have done in my classroom for some time. Actually the original idea was taken from an activity that I did as a child. The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to continue to practice their penmanship. Unfortunately, it seems that with each school year there is less and less time to work on these extremely important fine motor skills. For my class I create an extra book and we go through each page together. This allows me to model my expectations for writing and illustrating. It also allows the students to share their ideas which result in not only great conversation but detailed drawings. I have left out the illustrations on purpose. I tell my students that they need to use their imagination and illustrations to tell the story, instead of just coloring an outline in. There are fourteen pages and I usually start this after Thanksgiving to keep my students focused until the next holiday. They will also need to take the number on the scrabble letter and add it to the previous day’s sum. Which is a great way to reinforce addition! I hope that this will become an annual event in your classroom. My students have definitely enjoyed it. Happy Holidays!
