This is an activity that I have done in my classroom for some time. Actually the original idea was taken from an activity that I did as a child. The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to continue to practice their penmanship. Unfortunately, it seems that with each school year there is less and less time to work on these extremely important fine motor skills. For Kindergarten I have put each phrase on the paper. This way the students can just copy the phrase down on the next few lines. I have also included a blank page version if you would prefer for your students to copy it from the board. I like to anchor everything I do in my classroom with a book if possible. The book that I use to hook my students is called, “Room on the Broom”. It is another Halloween poem that uses the same sort of writing sequence through the use of rhyming words and details in illustrations. For my class I model write each of the pages and then as a class we brainstorm ideas for the pictures. I tell my students that they need to use their imagination and illustrations to tell the story. It is really neat to see the ideas that they come up with and everyday they beg me to do another page in their book. Begging to write, who could ask for anything more than that? I hope that this will become an annual event in your classroom. My students have definitely enjoyed it. Happy Halloween!
