Kindergarten Handwriting Practice with Letter Identification & Beginning Sounds!

These Alphabet Practice Sheets are designed with a highly supportive format to help students refine letter identification skills and knowledge of letter sounds while learning proper letter formation.

Upon request, this resource now contains 2 sheets for each vowel. The first sheet is the original, focusing mostly on words with the short vowel sound. Many of these are CVC words, with the vowel in the middle of the word.

The second option for each vowel has pictures of two words that begin with the short vowel sound.

To complete these sheets, students:

★ Rainbow trace the letter, using proper letter formation. I find it’s important to model this step before students begin.

★ Find and say the letter. (I like to have kids use a yellow crayon or highlighter for this step.)

★ Trace and then write the letter.

★ Trace and read words with the letter. This is a perfect time to focus on initial sounds and/or blending skills.

★ Optional: Return to the letter find. Use a pencil to circle words within the letter find. So all students can be successful, the words at the bottom of the page are included. To differentiate and review, common high frequency words are also included.

Some “bonus sheets” designed to help students retain their knowledge of letter formation and refine their letter-sound knowledge after completing the letter writing sheets are also included.
