The Kindergarten "Healthy Eating" activity packet is designed to meet the two specific expectations listed in the Ontario Full-Day Early Learning curriculum document. The specific expectations addressed in this packet are:
- Begin to demonstrate an understanding of the effects of healthy, active living on the mind and the body;
- Investigate the benefits of nutritious foods and explore ways of ensuring healthy eating;
Through this packet students are introduced to two characters: "Sometimes Sam" and "Everyday Ellen." Sometimes Sam likes sometimes foods and everyday Ellen loves everyday foods. Students learn that sometimes foods are ok to have, but sometimes only. Sometimes foods should not replace the everyday foods that Ellen recommends we eat.
This packet contains 8 lessons that focus on students learning about developing healthy habits and how these healthy habits help them and their bodies to grow. Each lesson is accompanied by either a mini-book activity, a colouring activity or a cut and paste activity. There is no printing required for this unit as the focus is on students understanding what the four food groups are and why it is important to develop healthy eating habits. Each lesson includes a small whole-group discussion and each lesson is intended to be short in terms of the amount of time students spend sitting and discussing the topic of the day.
This activity packet does include relevant answer keys. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. I would be more than happy to answer your questions! Please check out the preview to see some of what is included in this activity packet.
