Product Description

This packet contains the SEL (SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING) lesson plans and printables from WEEK 4 of our 36-week SEL-integrated Kindergarten Heroes™ curriculum. While SEL is integrated throughout all subjects within the Kindergarten Heroes curriculum, these lesson plans focus on it directly each day.

This packet integrates with the Kindergarten Heroes complete year curriculum, however you can adapt these math lessons to work as stand-alone units as well. The theme of Kindergarten Heroes Week 4 is Sir Edmund Hillary! Our Character trait focus is Heroes Are Modest (Show Humility). Our SEL strategy is "Take the Hope Float".

Week 4 begins with introducing our hero of the week, mountaineer and philanthropist Sir Edmund Hillary! This week students will explore the feelings of sadness and inadequacy (lack of confidence) and how to use the SEL Strategy of the Week - Take the Hope Float - to work through them. Students will see how Sir Edmund modeled humility in real life and then practice celebrating personal accomplishments with humility, by considering and acknowledging others in their speech and choices.

As we look into the life of Sir Edmund, we’ll uncover how this gentle giant not only achieved great things personally, but helped others achieve, too.

  • Day 1: We Meet the Hero. You’ll introduce students to Sir Edmund Hillary and the character trait of the week (be modest / show humility).
  • Day 2: We introduce the SEL Strategy “Take the Hope Float.” You’ll review the emotion of feeling unsure of oneself (“not enough rut”) and build a HOPE flipbook.
  • Day 3: We Think About the Hero. You’ll practice the character trait of modesty/humility as a team because teamwork takes humility! You’ll work togther to create a collaborative art piece.
  • Day 4: We Learn From the Hero. You’ll review the emotion of sadness in the life of the hero and reflect on things you can do when sad and also the changing nature of feelings as sadness comes and goes.
  • Day 5: We introducing the concept that “you don’t need a medal to know you’re someone special” and talk about bragging. We’ll practice with a lesson on “Beautiful Oops” - turning mistakes into treasures. We’ll close with a “crowning ceremony” for the “Show Modesty (Humility)” character trait.
