Product Description

This packet contains the SEL (SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING) lesson plans and printables from WEEK 6 of our 36-week SEL-integrated Kindergarten Heroes™ curriculum. While SEL is integrated throughout all subjects within the Kindergarten Heroes curriculum, these lesson plans focus on it directly each day.

This packet integrates with the Kindergarten Heroes complete year curriculum, however you can adapt these lessons to work as stand-alone units as well. The theme of Kindergarten Heroes Week 6 is  Mary Anning! Our Character trait focus is Heroes Are Proactive. Our SEL strategy is "Dig into the Common Ground".

Week 6 begins with introducing our hero of the week, paleontologist Mary Anning! This week students explore the feelings of anger, frustration and disappointment and how to use the SEL Strategy of the Week - Dig Into the Common Ground - to help build relationships and resolve interpersonal conflict. Students will see how Mary modeled proactivity when she used her meager resources to make major contributions! Lessons include playing fair and calming strategies for dealing with big feelings.

As we look into the life of Mary Anning, we’ll uncover how this clever scientist was proactive to solve problems and achieve her goals.

  • Day 1: We Meet the Hero. You’ll introduce students to Mary Anning and the character trait of the week (being proactive).
  • Day 2: We introduce the SEL Strategy of the week (Dig into the Common Ground) and play a questioning game to find similarities and differences among classmates (and/or family members for homeschoolers).
  • Day 3: We Think About the Hero. This lesson helps students recognize big emotions and introduces them to twelve calming strategies. Students complete a journal entry on the character trait of the week.
  • Day 4: We Learn From the Hero. Many people were unfair with Mary by not giving her proper credit for her work. Today’s lesson involves practicing four ways to play fair. Extend the lesson with a journal entry on the character trait of the week.
  • Day 5: We practice identifying common ground in interpersonal conflict scenarios. Using a “Dig into the Common Ground” game, students will think and learn about what two parties have in common, even when they disagree. We’ll close with a “crowning ceremony” for the “Be Proactive” character trait and add the sixth “destination” to the Character Quest Map!

According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and the Aspen Institute's Commission on Social, Emotional and Academic Development, SEL-integrated curriculum is needed to strengthen student outcomes and life success. Research has conclusively proven that SEL skills work, can be taught and not only improve social skills but also improve academic development.
