This language screening tool helps identify young students who may be at risk and in need of language intervention. There are 4 language tasks included in this screener: Picture Associations, WH- Questions, Naming Described Objects, and Categorization. Each task has 5 items. The only task presented with picture support is the Picture Associations.
When using this assessment, there is no exact PASS/FAIL score. I have used this with Kindergarten teachers to administer screenings to all Kindergarten students. We then take the average score and look at critical cut-offs to determine whether any students are significantly below the average range for the grade level.
This assessment can also be used with preschool age students and can be used as a progress monitoring tool. There should be at least 6 months between each administration of this screener.
