Resource Directions:

Hearts Upper & Lowercase Letter Match: Matching Game: Children match the capital & lowercase letters. Memory Game: Children can play this by placing the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if the upper & lowercase letters match. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game.

Valentine's Initial Sound Capital & Lowercase Match Games: Matching Game: Children match the pictures with the beginning sound capital & lowercase letter. Memory Game: Either use both letter cards or one letter card and the sound cards. Children can play this by placing the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if the letter and sound match. If it does they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game. Challenge: Memory game using all three cards in set to find and match. Letter & Sound Mat: Children can use these mats to help organize there letters and sound cards. Good resource for students who are just learning the letters and sounds or for those students who need visual aids. Picture List: List of pictures included in resource.

February Beginning Sound Clip Game: Children look at the picture in the box and decide what sound that picture begins with. Children place a paper clip or clothes pin to the correct letter that makes that same beginning sound as the picture. can write word on paper or white board or use one of the 10 worksheets to go with this activity.

President's Day Build Word Game: After game cards are cut apart and mixed up, children take a picture card and build the word with the letter sounds to make the word. Children must have one set of cards to build the word. Build a Word mat and worksheet are also included.

Groundhog Make a Word Family Game: Children take a consonant and put it in front of a word chunk to make a word. Children can write word on paper or white board or use one of the 10 worksheets to go with this activity. Words include all short vowel sounds and beginning blends.

Hearts Real & Nonsense Word Sort Game: Children place cards face down and take turns drawing a card. Student reads words and decides whether it is a real word or nonsense words. Child checks with partner or group to make sure he/she is accurate. Child writes or places words on t-chart on white board or use sheet provided in this resource (each student may have a sheet, or you could use one sheet for the whole game). The next person takes a turn. Play until all cards have been used.

Hearts Sight Word Game(s): Word Game: Children place cards face down and take turns drawing a card. If student can read the word, they keep it, if they cannot they must put it back. If they draw a Direction Card follow its directions. They must read all their cards, the person who has the most cards wins. Memory Game: Make two sets of the word cards and children place the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if they have matched the same words. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game.

February Short Vowel Sounds Roll It! Read It! Words & Sentences: Two types of game cards with short vowel sounds words and sentences. Each game card of words and sentences have each of the five vowel sounds. There are10 game cards in total. Students roll one dice and read the words or sentences in the row they have rolled.

Kids have some monthly fun while learning a variety of literacy skills!
