Using and recognizing 5 group numbers is essential to success with the EngageNY Math Modules as your kindergarten or first grade student moves forward. This center will give your learners great practice with counting scattered groups and then representing the number using 5 groups.
This center will help your learners meet standards K.CC.4 as they practice thier one to one match when counting the scattered group on the coconut counting card and K. CC5 as they represent that number in a different configuration on the 5 group work mat.
Includes: 5 Group Workmats in color and blackline
Printable Coconuts, Counting Cards and Number Cards
Student Direction Card and Teacher Directions
Model first using a sample workmat or displayed on your smartboard. Then, at a center, each student gets a workmat (printed in color, or printed in B&W and colored by them) and 10 coconuts or pennies. Provide a set of counting cards and number cards for the group. As they choose a card, they count, find the number, and then place the pennies in five group formation.
Follow with the 5 group worksheet for assessment.
Pieces in this center can also be used with other centers I have created for Module 1. This will save printing if you use more than one of my Chicka Chicka Numbers Centers for Module 1.
Counting KIsses gives your learners practice with counting out groups to match a given number. This is a skill that the modules don't provide as much practice as most of your kinders will need. You can use it as an independent center or for small group work. After counting practice, your learners will love making a book to show the kisses that Chester got. It may be hard for some to draw a resemblance of a heart. Xs are also kisses!!
Use the included printable hearts if needed, but works great with candy kisses (which can be eaten or sent home in baggies as a treat!) Make "fake" candy kisses with foil. Find foam hearts in a craft store.
Another use: Use as a classroom display for numbers!
Please see my store for other math centers for use with the Common Core Modules.
