Decomposing Numbers for Kindergartners Equal or Less Than 10. By Claire Guidry
The following packet meets the requirements for following the Common Core Standards in math for kindergarten.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
3. Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way,
e.g. by using objects or drawings and record each decomposition by drawing or equation
(e.g. 5=2+3 and 5=4+1).
Before using this packet. I have taught my kindergarteners to recognize and write numbers
1 to 10, how to add and to develop a little bit of fluency with low numbers. I also play a
little guessing game with them. I write a number on the board and they have to guess
two numbers that can make up that number. I draw the boxes that I have on these
worksheets so they become familiar with the boxes that are filled with the number pairs.
I also use a number line and objects to help those who are not grasping the concept
Plus I demonstrate to the students how to write their own math equations. Once I feel that
most of the students are capable of this I pass out these handouts.

A large percentage of my kindergarten students are reading and writing at a mid-first grade level and higher by the end of the school year. Some are reading 80+ words per min. and writing 5 sentences tied together on one topic.
