These math journals will help students understanding of what each numeral represents. Students will cut and paste each math journal in their math journal notebooks. Math journal notebooks can be composition notebooks, spiral notebooks, etc. Students will think of three different ways to represent the numeral in their math journal. The ultimate goal is for students to realize that each numeral represents a quantity of objects. For example, if the numeral is four students could draw four sticks, four circles, four flowers, etc. Teachers can give smiley faces, stickers, etc. to students who successfully finish. Those who finish earlier than others can continue to draw different ways to represent the numeral in their math journal.
These math journals are ENGAGING for students because it allows them to be creative when thinking of different ways to represent numerals.
